This unique and beautiful hand-embroidered cushion in black felt wool portrays the head and shoulders of the celebrated 20th century artist, Frida Kahlo. True to her inimitable style, this design is appliquéd as a variation of the iconic portrait which graced the front cover of Vogue magazine in 1939, at the height of Frida's fame. It is stitched in the traditional way, using blanket stitch, chain and straight stitch and depicts Frida in her beloved traditional Mexican costume, with her braided black hair and distinctive floral headdress, against a backdrop of vibrant green palm leaves. This cushion has the official approval of the Frida Kahlo Corporation and is available in two colours, black or cream. It is fastened on the back with two mother of pearl buttons.
Recently Frida Kahlo was the subject of a major exhibition at the V&A, called ‘Making Her Self Up’.
